On behalf of WARN, I applaud the recent verdict in the George Floyd murder. The jury found former police officer, Derek Chauvin, guilty on all three counts  — second degree murder, third degree murder, and manslaughter.

We have always maintained that bully cops (see Policing and Bullying: Making the Connection) are the worst type of bullies, because society grants police officers a wide range of unfettered discretion. As we have publicly stated before, most police officers do not abuse their discretion, and serve honorably.

Yet when bullies are given badges and guns, the result – as we have far too often seen – is that the least entitled and most marginalized groups in our society bear the tragic consequences. Often fatal consequences.

It should not be cause for worldwide celebration when just one bully cop is held accountable for abusing the public trust. We must remain steadfast in our commitment to our national pledge of allegiance:

“One nation, under God, with liberty and justice for all.”

Not liberty and justice only for the privileged.
